11th Chicago International Education Conference

Press Play: Globalizing Your Classroom Through Film

The 11th Annual International Education Conference “Press Play > Globalizing Your Classroom Through Film” will explore how educators can utilize films to bring international content into their classrooms. Whether it be narrative features, documentaries, or student-created projects, film can be a powerful tool in demonstrating how a single story can elucidate the larger human condition. Come and learn how film can provide a global lens for your students to examine their world.

Light breakfast, lunch, and instructional materials included. 5 PD hours.

Presenters

Amanda Friedeman

Amanda Friedeman is Harvey L. Miller Family Youth Educator at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, where she oversees training and supervision of the museum’s 200+ volunteer docents, the Speakers’ Bureau of Holocaust Survivors and second generation speakers, and programming for students, educators, and families. She also serves as lead facilitator for the Brill Law Enforcement Democracy and Action initiative, which provides training for all Chicago Police Department Recruits and promotional officers as well as suburban and Cook County law enforcement officers. She holds a BA in Art History from Princeton University and an MA in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with emphases in museum- and community-based programs, interdisciplinary curricula, and visual literacy.


Fareed Mostoufi

Fareed Mostoufi is the Senior Education Manager at Pulitzer Center, where he focuses on designing classroom resources and educational experiences that connect global news with students and educators. He joined the team after working for nearly four years as a theater artist and educator in the Community Engagement department at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. While at Arena, Fareed devised and directed original, autobiographical plays with communities in Washington D.C., Peru, India and Croatia that explored violence, health and identity. Before that, Fareed taught ESL and Spanish in D.C. Public Schools and taught culture, literature and playwriting at a teachers’ college in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina as a Fulbright Scholar. Fareed received his BFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University in 2008 and his MA in Teaching from American University in 2012. He is passionate about social justice and is a firm believer in the power of storytelling to cultivate empathy.


Milos Stehlik

Milos Stehlik is the founder and director of Facets, an international center for film exhibition, distribution, preservation and education, which he has led since 1975. He has served on the juries of numerous world film festivals, is a member of the Board of Governors of the Telluride Film Festival, and for the past two decades the film critic for WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio. He was named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture and received the Jan Masaryk award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. He has served on numerous panels including those of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Bush Foundation, contributes frequently to Classic ChicagoMagazine, and has made presentations to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the National Council for the Arts, the National Alliance of Media Arts Centers and the American Library Association. For his radio work, he received the Associated Press Best Commentary of the Year Award.


Christina Thornell

Christina Thornell is a video journalist at Vox.com, where she produces, researches and reports foreign videos, including for Emmy-nominated series Vox Borders and Vox Atlas. She holds a BA in Journalism from Universidad Antonio de Nebrija (Madrid, Spain) and a MA in International Reporting from CUNY School of Journalism.
